Crime victims advocate for program funding with Commonwealth’s Attorney Descano

FAIRFAX — For more than an hour on Wednesday (Nov. 19), Descano, Arlington Commonwealth’s Attorney Parisa Deghani-Tafti and Norfolk CA Ramin Fatehi listened to crime survivors at the National Organization of Victim Advocacy (510 King Street) headquarters, next door to the Alexandria Courthouse.
The victim of domestic violence, NaQuetta Mitchell was able to leave her ex-husband and move from Texas to her family in Virginia. Her ex-husband, a U.S. Army veteran, was dishonorably discharged with post-traumatic stress disorder, ended up remarrying, and then killed his wife and himself when she threatened to leave him with their children, according to Mitchell.

RICHMOND — A Richmond family grapples with the stress of having a newborn in the NICU while also planning the funeral of the mother, who was shot and killed just nine days after giving birth.
“This is something that has impacted multi-generations in their family,” said Amanda Lynch, a family cousin. 34-year-old Johnnita Russell was shot to death Sunday night in a home on Hunt Avenue, just one day before her birthday.

Local nonprofit Women of Endurance provides resources to families experiencing hardships

HOPEWELL — A local nonprofit is pulling women out of unimaginable hardships and getting them back on their feet.
Women of Endurance specializes in giving much needed resources to those who have fallen between the cracks and have nowhere else to turn.
“I birthed Women of Endurance out of those gaps that I saw in a lot of systems in the state of Virginia. It was birthed out of, you know, somewhat of turning my pain into purpose,” said executive director and founder NaQuetta Mitchell.

Alright, NaQuetta thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
The best missions are typically based or closely related to a *SEE* SIGNIFICANT EMOTIONAL EVENT. Our mission is no different- the story behind my mission for Women Of Endurance is my story. As a survivor of domestic violence in my marriage, I know what it took to start over as a forced single mother – with almost no organizations to assist me as I tried to rebuild my whole life with a four year old and newborn needing me.

Petersburg African American Trolley Tour: Treska Wilson-Smith fine-tuning it

PETERSBURG — Have you taken the Petersburg African American Trolley Tour? The inaugural tour took place in February in honor of Black History Month. The free seats were scooped up quickly.
"It is the first tour for African American history in the city," Treska Wilson-Smith said. "It means a lot to me because this will help the city in a lot of ways. When we first introduced the tour, it took off. We had only planned to do two tours, but we had such a waiting list that we ended up giving a number of tours."

HOPEWELL — A mother living with renal failure and lupus expressed gratitude over strangers stepping up to help her overcome another life challenge — homelessness.
Shadea Battle and her daughters have temporary living quarters at the Stay Over Suites thanks to Eleisha Davis and the generosity of strangers.
“I’m just so glad that she came into my life," Battle said. “She’s an angel.”

Hopewell Mayor Bennett, Delegate Coyner, other mothers celebrated at Guncotton Coffee

HOPEWELL — Twenty-six moms in the Hopewell area including Hopewell Mayor Patience Bennett and Delegate Carrie Coyner [R - 62nd] were recognized for excelling at motherhood.
Moms who inspire through their extraordinary resilience, grace and care were identified by the Lamb Center for Arts and Healing in partnership with The James House, Women of Endurance, and Hopewell/ Prince George Healthy Families.
On Mother's Day weekend, the recipients were treated to an event designed to celebrate them. The nominees' children were also guests at the Mother of the Year Awards celebration held at Guncotton Coffee's event space in Hopewell.

Petersburg: Unity and love at 'Regional STOP the Violence' community festival

PETERSBURG — At the event, nonprofit organizations were present to provide important information to the community, and families displayed photos of loved ones that died at the hand of violence.
"We are grateful for the works that Pastor Baugh and her church's ministry have done without hesitation across this region, seen and unseen," NaQuetta Mitchell, Women of Endurance CEO and founder, said. "We were thankful for the opportunity to do outreach alongside some of our favorite organizations: The James House, Lending Helping Hands, Justin J. Davis Heart Foundation, OC3, VA Chain Breakers, LLC, P.O.U.R [Provide, Offer, Uplift, rebuild], Hebron VA, Inc., Legal Aid Justice Center and so many others."

Local chambers of commerce recognize 40 under 40

COLONIAL HEIGHTS — The lobby of Sonabank’s Colonial Heights Branch was packed with nominees and chamber members who were there to support individuals with a passion for our community. Members and guests enjoyed locally sourced refreshments and winners were awarded with an embossed portfolio and a 40 Under 40 window cling for the “Class of 2019.”
